There is a verse in James that does not leave much room for excuses. James 1:22 says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” Read that again. James is not writing to people who never open a Bible. He is writing to people who hear the Word but walk away unchanged. He calls that deception. When we hear the truth but refuse to act on it, we can convince ourselves that knowing what God says is the same as obeying Him. It is not.

That is a difficult truth in a church culture that can sometimes measure faith by attendance or Bible knowledge rather than obedience. You can know the book of James from beginning to end and still be the hearer James warns about. Knowledge alone is not spiritual maturity. James compares it to looking into a mirror and then walking away, immediately forgetting what you saw.

The Command Behind the Command

Notice the words James uses: “Be ye doers.” He does not say to obey only when the timing feels right or when you feel ready. Being a doer of the Word should be part of who we are as Christians. The truth is, we will not always feel ready to obey God. Sometimes obedience comes when we are tired. Sometimes it comes when we feel weak or uncertain. God may call us to act before we feel prepared for what He is asking us to do. That is where faith becomes more than something we simply talk about.

So Do It

Do it tired, when you would rather stay home than show up and serve. Do it weak, when you feel like you have little left to give. Do it scared, when you do not know how everything will turn out. Do it anyway, because the Word of God was never meant to only be heard. It was meant to change the way we live.

Faith Shows Up in the Doing

James is not saying that hearing the Word is unimportant. Hearing matters. Preaching matters. Bible study matters. But all of it should lead somewhere. God's Word should affect the decisions we make, the way we treat people, and the way we serve Him. A faith that never moves beyond what we know has missed the point James is making. Think about the people who faithfully serve at Cornerstone. Some come in after a long week and still find a way to help. Others prepare to teach a class, serve in a ministry, or pray with someone who is hurting while carrying burdens of their own. They may not always feel ready. They simply choose to be doers of the Word.

Git-R-Done

Around here, we have a simple saying for this: Git-R-Done. It may not sound like fancy theology, but the point is worth remembering. Stop waiting for the perfect moment. Stop waiting until you feel completely ready. If God has shown you something in His Word that you need to do, obey Him. Maybe there is a conversation you have been avoiding. Maybe there is a ministry you know you should get involved in. Maybe you simply need to remain faithful when staying home would be easier. Whatever it is, remember the words of James. Be a doer of the Word.
