Christians are often asked difficult questions about God, the Bible, salvation, and suffering. Some people ask because they are curious. Others may be struggling with doubts or trying to understand what Christians actually believe. Whatever the reason, believers should be prepared to explain their faith with clarity and grace.

The Bible says in 1 Peter 3:15, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” Christian apologetics is not simply about winning an argument. It is about giving a reasonable defense of the Christian faith while pointing people back to the truth of Scripture. Here are ten popular apologetics questions Christians may encounter.

1. How Do We Know God Exists?

The Bible does not begin by trying to prove that God exists. It begins with the declaration, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Scripture presents God as the Creator of everything that exists.

Creation itself also points to Him. When we look at the order of the universe and the complexity of life, we see evidence of design. Romans 1:20 says, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made.” The world around us gives testimony that there is a Creator behind creation.

2. How Can We Know the Bible Is True?

Christians believe the Bible is more than a collection of religious writings. Scripture claims to have come from God. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

The Bible was written across many generations, yet it presents one consistent message about God’s plan of redemption. Its fulfilled prophecies also give strong reason to take its claims seriously. Jesus Himself affirmed the truth of God’s Word when He prayed in John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” Our confidence in the Bible ultimately rests in the God who gave it.

3. If God Is Good, Why Is There Evil and Suffering?

This is one of the hardest questions people ask. The Bible teaches that God created a good world, but mankind chose to rebel against Him. Sin entered the world and brought death and suffering with it. Romans 5:12 says, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin.” The brokenness we see around us is not evidence that God created evil. It is evidence that we live in a fallen world affected by sin.

God also entered into human suffering through Jesus Christ. He experienced rejection, pain, and death. The Bible promises that suffering will not last forever. Revelation 21:4 says, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying.” Christians may not understand every tragedy, but we can trust that God remains just and that suffering will one day come to an end.

4. Aren’t All Religions Basically the Same?

Many religions may share certain moral teachings, but their core beliefs are not the same. They make different claims about God, salvation, sin, and what happens after death. Christianity is especially distinct in what it teaches about Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Christianity does not teach that people can earn their way to God by becoming good enough. It teaches that salvation comes through Christ alone. Acts 4:12 says, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

5. Why Would a Loving God Send People to Hell?

The Bible teaches that God is loving, but it also teaches that He is holy and just. Sin matters because it is rebellion against a holy God. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

God has also provided a way for sinners to be saved. He does not delight in people rejecting Him. 2 Peter 3:9 says that the Lord is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” The cross shows how seriously God takes sin, but it also shows the depth of His love. Christ paid the price so that forgiveness could be offered freely to those who trust in Him.

6. Is Jesus Really God?

The Bible does not present Jesus as merely a teacher or prophet. It identifies Him as God who came in human flesh. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Then John 1:14 says, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” These verses connect Jesus directly with the eternal Word who is God.

After seeing the risen Christ, Thomas said to Jesus in John 20:28, “My Lord and my God.” The deity of Christ is not a minor teaching in Christianity. It is central to who Jesus is and why His sacrifice has the power to save.

7. Did Jesus Really Rise From the Dead?

The resurrection of Jesus is at the center of the Christian faith. The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:14, “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.” The New Testament records that Jesus was crucified and buried, but it also records that He was seen alive afterward. 1 Corinthians 15:6 says, “After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once.”

The disciples did not continue preaching because they merely remembered Jesus fondly. They boldly proclaimed that He had risen from the dead. The resurrection is the foundation of the Christian message and the reason Christians have hope beyond the grave.

8. What About People Who Have Never Heard About Jesus?

This question often comes up when discussing salvation. The Bible teaches that God is completely righteous and will never judge anyone unfairly. Genesis 18:25 asks, “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” The answer is yes. God always does what is right.

Scripture also teaches that creation reveals something about God to all people. At the same time, the Bible places great importance on sharing the Gospel. Romans 10:14 asks, “And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?” This is one reason Christians take evangelism and missions seriously. We have been commanded to take the message of Christ to others.

9. Can Someone Be a Good Person Without Being a Christian?

People who are not Christians can certainly do kind things and care for others. The real question, however, is whether anyone can be good enough to meet God’s perfect standard. The Bible says in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Every person has sinned, which means none of us can earn salvation through our own goodness.

That is why salvation must come by grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Good works cannot erase our sin. We need the forgiveness that is found in Jesus Christ.

10. Why Should I Believe in Jesus?

Christianity eventually brings every person to a personal question. Why Should I Believe in Jesus? The Bible teaches that we are sinners and cannot save ourselves. Jesus willingly died for our sins so that we could be forgiven. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Salvation is not earned by doing enough good works or becoming religious enough. It is received through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Christian apologetics can answer difficult questions, but the goal is not merely to give people more information. The goal is to help them understand the truth of the Gospel and point them toward Christ.

Be Ready to Give an Answer

Christians do not need to have an immediate answer to every question they are asked. There is nothing wrong with admitting that you need to study a subject more carefully. What matters is having a desire to know God’s Word and being willing to grow in your understanding of the faith. Our confidence does not come from our ability to debate. It comes from the truth of Scripture. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

At Cornerstone Baptist Church, we want Christians to understand what they believe and why they believe it. Studying apologetics can strengthen our own faith and help us speak with greater confidence when others have questions about Christianity. Most importantly, it gives us another opportunity to point people toward Jesus Christ.
